How to Get to Holbox Island?

Well, to be more precise, how to get to the Chiquilá ferry terminal? Before enjoying the paradise beaches of Holbox, you'll need to take a journey of approximately 2 hours from the airport or downtown Cancun to the Chiquilá terminal. There, you can purchase your ticket to take the ferry that will bring you directly to the island. But, what are your options for getting there? Don't worry, we'll explain it to you right away.

Shared Transfer

Whether you're arriving from Cancun Airport or downtown, you can opt for the shuttles—Crafter-type vehicles offering a quick, safe, and affordable service to the Chiquilá ferry terminal. These transfers have specific departure times and cost 500 MXN per person for a one-way trip or 1000 MXN for a round trip. This service is ideal if you're traveling solo, as a couple, or in a group of less than 6 people. It's worth mentioning that we have a reservation system, so you can avoid waiting in line, and in case the shuttle is full, you won’t need to wait for the next departure time. Want to book your transfer from the airport? Click here. Want to book your transfer from downtown Cancun? Click here.

Private Transfer

If you prefer a more personalized experience, a private transfer to Holbox is your best option. Unlike the shared service, the private transfer picks you up directly from Cancun Airport, your hotel, or wherever you are. The advantage of this service is that you decide the departure time, offering you greater flexibility.

The downside? The price. While the shared transfer costs 500 MXN per person, the private transfer costs 3000 MXN per vehicle. Therefore, if you're traveling in a group of less than 6 people, the shared transfer might be more economical—unless you prefer the comfort and flexibility without worrying about the cost.

Rented or Personal Car

If you prefer more freedom to explore at your own pace on the way to Chiquilá, renting a car or using your own vehicle is an excellent option. The route is straightforward and allows you to stop wherever you like. But, attention! SPOILER ALERT: Cars are not allowed on Holbox, so you will need to leave your vehicle in one of the public parking lots near the Chiquilá ferry terminal before boarding the ferry to the island.

Ferry to HolboxFerry to Holbox

Chiquilá, in itself, is not the final step to reach Holbox Island, Mexico. The last step is the journey from the port of Chiquilá to the island, which is done via a maritime ferry (or "Ferry" for the friends).

The cost of the ferry is 440 Mexican pesos for adults. However, this price is not absolute: If you are a resident of the states of Quintana Roo or Yucatan, you pay less.

This cost refers to a round-trip ticket (both ways). There is also the option to pay for a one-way ticket (either one-way or return only), which costs 220 Mexican pesos or approximately 15 USD.

Why would you only pay for a one-way or return trip? Remember that the ferry is not the only way to get to Holbox from Chiquilá, as the island has a small airstrip that allows the arrival of small aircraft. So, if it's within your budget to "fly and enjoy the scenery from above," who are we to tell you no?

Is Holbox, Quintana Roo Pet Friendly?

The answer to this question is "sort of." In theory, animals are not allowed on the island, as they may pose a risk to the local wildlife and other aspects. However, because Holbox is a peaceful island surrounded by calm waters, fine sandy beaches, and is a popular destination for travelers who want to enjoy their time with their beloved furry companions, an unofficial "Pet Friendly" culture has emerged.

What does this mean? It means that you can travel to Holbox Island with your pet, and you'll be pleasantly surprised to find that most hotels, accommodations, restaurants, and even tour operators are pet friendly.

Some beaches even allow your animals to enjoy the refreshing waters and fine sandy shores. However, it’s important to note that there are areas, such as the mangrove zones, where PETS ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED. To maintain this unofficial "Pet Friendly" culture and ensure that the island remains a welcoming place for animals, it is essential that every pet owner is responsible: they must take care of their pet, ensure it does not harm the local flora and fauna, and above all, preserve the island's natural beauty.
